Amika, a support center for orphans and underprivileged children in Madagascar. Amika is located in Tulear, in the southwestern region of Madagascar, which is affected by climate change-related phenomena such as droughts, floods, and cyclones. The area faces severe poverty, and access to education is very limited. The Amika association comes to the aid of poor and orphaned children, helping them attend school. The Amika center operates as a school named Saint-Nicolas. Outside of school hours, the center offers extracurricular activities, including meal distribution and access to healthcare. Through a scholarship program, the association funds the education of children in need from 6th grade through college at other institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Ejeda, in southwestern Madagascar, the Assumptionist community leads the vital work of the bush schools. This network, present in four dioceses (Toliara, Fianarantsoa, Antananarivo, Port-Berg\u00e9), helps meet the urgent need for education in the poorest areas of Madagascar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would like to share with you what we have done and experienced here in relation to the various tasks we must carry out as part of our mission in \u201cJPIC.\u201d This directly concerns what we are experiencing in our region or diocese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environmental protection: We are responding to Pope Francis\u2019 call in \u201cLaudato si\u201d for the protection of the environment. The Diocese of Tulear and the southern region of Madagascar are facing the challenge of deforestation and are on the verge of becoming semi-deserted. Our focus is shifting toward classroom education with the children, the future generation of the country. We have begun environmental education and hands-on reforestation efforts at several rural schools near Tulear, with the goal of protecting nature.  There are 1,006 students in 8 rural schools benefiting from this environmental education, with a goal of planting 4,000 trees by 2025 and 2026. Of course, parents are also involved and made aware through education for all and the PARENT SCHOOL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Training on the protection of minors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this in mind, the focus is not limited to reforestation; we have also provided training to teachers on the protection of children and minors, as abuse and neglect of minors exist in society. Therefore, we believe that schools can change mindsets and protect those who are vulnerable and weak. The current government\u2019s policy also focuses on the protection of minors. Through the Parents\u2019 School, we emphasize that the family or home is the first school to provide a comprehensive education; therefore, the protection of minors is not solely the responsibility of teachers in the classroom but, above all, of parents and the entire local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
